Baton Rouge Lifestyle Family Photography | God’s Got This

FILED IN: Family

This lifestyle family photography session is one of the most emotional ones I’ve ever photographed. When my client contacted me with their story, I knew right away that I just had to work with this family. Her mother had recently been diagnosed with cancer, and it had been a rocky year for them all. They weren’t sure what the future had in store for them, but the prognosis was such that they knew that photographs would need to be a priority.

Although they are going to fight this battle with everything they have, cancer stops you in your tracks. It makes you realize that any moment we have on this earth could be our last. Life has no guarantees, after all, so it was important to them to get photographs with this strong, amazing woman while they knew they still could.

I loved so much about this lifestyle family photography session. I loved how even in the midst of a scary medical situation, this woman’s spirit was indomitable. Cancer does not dominate her life – her family does. She’s determined to live her life to the fullest – regardless of how much time is left to her.

I also love how much the kids absolutely adored their grandma. You could see their love in every tight squeeze, mischievous glance, and loving snuggle. This wasn’t the kind of grandma that you’re forced to hug as a kid, and smells like mothballs. She was an absolute rock star, adored by her children and grandchildren. Her sunny spirit, genuine joy in spending time with them, and rock solid faith that God was in control of this situation was so moving.

God’s Got This

The one image I feel most sums up this woman’s attitude was the one which shows her desk decor – a plaque which reads “God’s Got This.”

We spent this day together at her assisted living facility, just doing what was most important to them all. She read with her grandkids, played, and painted with them. We made sure to get some portraits with everyone, as well. We made memories together this day, and I felt so privileged to have been there to document this time for them.

Check out the images below and follow along with this sweet family’s story!

These two had such a sweet bond!

I love that these images document not only the bond between grandmother and granddaughter, but also the stage of life Audrey was in – I love that she sucks her two fingers!

No fights broke out in the selection of who was pressing the elevator button. I give that another 3-4 months, though! 😉

Sometimes the sweetest stories are communicated through the smallest of touches.

I love this image! The connection between these two, and also what we call “mirroring” in the photography world. Humans unconsciously mirror one another, and it’s so fun to capture in an image!

Boys, man…when they’re not in the mood, that’s *it*, haha!

This book was so special to this family – it’s going to be a treasured memory for years to come.

The thing about spending time with kids, is that there’s almost never any long stretch of time in which someone doesn’t get hurt. I only spent an hour with these guys, but sure enough….there was sibling friction, and a resulting bump on the head. I love this moment between Miles and his mom, where she holds him tight to comfort him. But also…kinda laughs at the level of drama.

What do you do when there’s not an ice pack handy? You grab a mini ice cream from the freezer. Good luck going back to regular ice packs ever again, Mom.

Is there anyone who spoils a kid more than an Auntie? As an auntie….I say, probably not.

This book talks all about loving your family from their head to their toes…funny faces WERE made!

Apparently Miles loves a little…aggressively, sometimes. Head-buts are funny at 2 years old!

This image is one that’s so meaningful, to me. I love the juxtaposition of young Audrey’s hand, alongside her grandmother’s, here. I love that she was determined to “help” her grandmother walk! <3
